The 1st
International Street Theatre Festival in Greece is a fact! The Festival
will take place in Athens, from September 30 until October 4, 2009, in areas
within the historical centre of Athens and around the Sacred Rock of Acropolis.
For five days, small or greater spectacles will be presented by Greek and
foreign groups.
The Festival is an initiative of Street
Theatre HELIX, which invites anyone who works on street theatre, to embrace
it and participate, so as to render it soon in a strong institution,
internationally acknowledged, which will push forward and promote this specific
kind of theatre in the open air.
The 1st International Street Theatre Festival is realized in
cooperation and with the financing of the “National
Centre of Theatre and Dance” of the Hellenic Ministry of Civilization,
sponsored by the Municipality of Athens, the Cultural Organization of the
Athens City Hall, the Hellenic Centre of International Theatre Institute (iTi)
and the General Secretariat of Youth.
The Festival is divided in two parts: the main and the open part. The
main part will host strictly selected groups, while the open part will be free,
where single artists or groups can participate, covering the whole spectrum and
expressions of Street Theatre.
The Festival is competitive and four (4) Prizes will be awarded. For the
main program, there are two equivalent Prizes: a) Prize of “Direction and
overall conception” and b) Prize of “Proposal for a spectacle in an open area”.
The above Prizes will be accompanied by a money award of 4.000 € each. A
Special Prize will be awarded exclusively in a Greek group, accompanied by an
Invitation for participation in an International Festival abroad. A fourth
Prize will be awarded to a group or single artist of the open part, equivalent
to an Invitation for participation in the next year’s Festival, together with a
money award of 2.000 €.
The Prizes will be awarded by a special Committee, consisted by
independent and renowned people from the fields of Arts and Theatre.
Street Theatre HELIX, as the main organizer of the Festival, will
participate with some spectacles, out of the running.
Street Theatre is characterized by pluralism, multiformity, it uses
different materials and has a variety of starting points, always aiming in the
open area. It achieves to intervene and transform the areas of the city,
rendering them in places of action and artistic expression. The Festival will
aim exactly in this multiformity and the elevation of the public areas in a
place of expression and communication of the artistic play with the broader,
multifarious and diverse audience.
The Opening Ceremony will take place on the first day of the Festival,
in a central open area. During the second, the third and the fourth day, from
the afternoon till late, the groups and single artists will perform, while
during the morning, indoor seminars and discussions will take place.
The morning of the fourth day, in a specific indoor area, there will be
the presentation of the groups which participated in the Festival, as well as
the Prizes awards. During the evening of the same day, the Closing Ceremony
will take place, with the parade of the groups and various parties.
Groups or single artists, who are interested in participating in the Festival,
are invited to submit their proposals, as well as their statement of interest,
until June 30, 2009. The proposals must be complete, with relevant texts
concerning the groups and the spectacles proposed. Further, they must be
accompanied by photos and DVD. The proposals can be sent in the following
